Securing the future of our spire and tower

At the heart of Knighton for 700 years
Since the fourteenth century the spire of St Mary Magdalen has been a stable landmark on the Knighton skyline, as the world around it – our society and culture, our politics and priorities- have changed immeasurably. Countless generations of travellers have used the spire to guide them into the city of Simon de Montefort and Richard III, Thomas Cook and Alice Hawkins. The statue of Mary Magdalen on the tower has survived the Civil War and the Puritans, the Victorian ‘restorers’ and wartime bombing. She has kept a careful watch as the fields and lanes of a country village have been transformed into a busy multi-ethnic suburb of Leicester. For more than a thousand years the church in Knighton has been at the heart of our community life, and the spire has pointedly reminded us that we all have a part in something bigger, inspiring us on our journeys.
But now the spire needs the care of this generation.
The years and the weather have taken their toll and urgent repair work is needed to strengthen and secure the spire and to restore the tower stonework. Although grants and some reserves will help us, we need to raise £40,000 to ensure that this essential work can be done over the next year. Plans for the work are well advanced, so the funds are needed now.
A variety of fund-raising events will be taking place in 2019/20, but the easiest and best way to help is to make a direct donation, of any size, and to Gift Aid it if you are a tax-payer.
Your gift to the InSpired appeal will help to ensure that future generations in Knighton understand and appreciate their shared heritage and history, that our community maintains its heart and identity, and that we are all Inspired to travel together.
